tim hawkinson

I saw the tim hawkinson show at the Whitney and it was so dissapointing. i have a book of his and I always admired his clever ingenuity. In person it reads as gimmicky and quirky. (like the kid who wears two different colored socks in art school) "he's so wacky!"
this is the type of work your mom and kids like. It's so pedestrian and visually thin. That said, I do love that uber organ and the big Pentacost. Does anyone agree with me? Am I alone in this alienation?

Not at all.
Back when he was annointed into the upper reachs of the art world with the show at Ace, I felt as you do. His work is wacky and obsessive and confounding in its, yes "pedestrian" good word, accessibility. Mad scientist dumb. Conceptually easy and labor intensive at the same time. Perfect cheap thrill for the masses.
Haven't seen the show so maybe I speak to soon, but I hardly think you are alone, Mountain Man.

hmmmm MM. You may have given me a reason to leave cyberspace. Perhaps I need to go to the Whitney too so that I can weigh in on this. It's been far too long since I've had artistic thoughts. I miss them.

I have been afraid to see this show because I am sick of hating things. Is it any different from his shows at Ace in the past? Wacky spectacle lacking direction? Seen it once, seen it? Maybe that is too harsh.

I am feeling guilty and harsh. The TH work I saw years ago at Ace was enjoyable - and I'm sure his show at Whitney is fine as well. I should go & see it before I get uppity.

FB, Don't feel badly. My advice to you is to only go to the Tim hawkinson only if you are curious about what art schools aspire to. It made me tired.

too many explanations easily at hand. Very easy to talk about in a crit. Very easy to write about. lacking.
