Studio Soundtrack a.k.a. Lifesaver

Re-immersion in relic-production is painfully not easy after the show happens and ends in a way that is less than thrilling. You probably know that already. Questioning of self occurs. Remembering of comments on Painter NYC occurs, not unlike the grad school voices that take years to exorcise. But whatever the show was a good thing and you are happy you had it, it's just that you try to make paintings again and it seems ridiculous, pointless, horridly self-indulgent. Then you remember people like PD who keep going no matter what and you get a nice email from a friend who causes you to feel you have been seen for a split second - you remember that the whole point of this endeavor is not to make money or to get public recognition or to be "successful" in all the ways we have been taught to - it is really ultimately about the deep need to make work for yourself and also a sense of community. So. You make it because you have to and because there are some wonderful people out there who understand you. That is what matters. I am back on track in the studio after months of retardation. Partially it's because of my darling pals who inspire me every day. I love you. And partially it's because I would probably be a criminal if I didn't. The other part is because of the following songs that I am back in the shack. I highly recommend them. Dork quotient is high. Here is MM's Top 40.

1. Comus: The Prisoner
2. Faust: Track 25
3. Bauhaus: Bela Lugosi's Dead

13. Destroyer: Hey Snow White
14. Ali Farka Toure and Ry Cooder: Bonde
15. The Futureheads: Hounds of Love
16. Depeche Mode: Never Let Me Down Again
17. Blonde Redhead: In Particular
18. Toots and the Maytals: Sweet and Dandy
19. Neneh Cherry: Buffalo Stance
20. Dungen: Panda
21. Mya: Ghetto Superstar

Faust: Der Baum from Faust Tapes. Amazing album.

I love how most psychedelic songs are in a minor key. I love. The ecstasy that is tempered by a bitter experience of the world.

ps - prog rock, cheesy hip hop, 80's and afro-pop, not so different as you might think.

pps - i have to mention mahavishnu orchestra as another fave. permanent love of the idealist expressionism.

Loving so much. You are a true inspiration, MM.
MM, do you consider yourself an idealist Romantic, partially, as an artist? That's a real question. I kind of see you that way, partially. I hope you don't take that badly because I mean it in the best way.

Brills, MM; I am ready for some new sounds, & you're inspiring me. Good studio soundrack: priceless.

yes MM. yes. I share many of your inspirational tunes. thanks.

MM, Slothy, Capt'n and Krix....Love is all around. I just got back and had a most splendid time in the mountains and valleys and lakes. So happy that you are schmearing with abandon MM. Also happy you like the Faust tapes...a fave of mine too. We listened to Never Let Me Down Again twice on the way home, as well as the entire Dungen CD maybe 3 times.

And Cruel to be Kind...now you're talkin'!

i have only heard of about 1/10 of these tunes mm. this is what a dork i am. but i love what you wrote about making art. one thing the noz told me that i always think of... we make art for our own generation, our friends, people who CAN understand us or have the need to. we don't have to reach anyone else. this helps me.

pd, welcome back!

I realized I put Sweet and Dandy by Toots 2 times. I must really like that song. Let's replace one with Prince: I wanna be your lover. Let's do that.

Capt'n, I consider myself a Romantic in the tortured tradition of big feelings. However I am aware that this is a somewhat futile perspective. So I don't know what you would call that. I love you for asking.

PEEDS!!!!!!!!!!!! You are back. I am delighted like a pink pig on a linoleum floor that's been smeared in poo. Ya heard me? You are the cutest.

Hey everyone, I am coming back this evening for a group show opening at Feigen. If you wanna come I would love to see you, will be there around 7 probably. If not I will not hold it against you in any way.

Special shout out to DS who showed the way to Impala Syndrome and The Politicians. Also these really amazing psychedelic music blogs. Thanx with an X. You rule.

I will check out the Faust, yes.

Thanks for that Noz quote, Dubz. I'm gonna steal it.

Yes. It is good to hear it straight from the Noz. He is very smart and down to earth about these things.

I think you should make art for me and me only. For I AM STAN LIEBOWITZ. What more do you need to know?

dubz said...

all i want to know is why peeds is dissin' me. i am crying in my cubicle. i'm beside myself if that is possible.

Did you buy the Comus MM? I am so jealous! I also love mahavishnu orchestra. I want to hear it right now. oh the minor keys... and complicated biznatch. I am weirdly re-obsessed with early pavement still. I cannot stop listening to it. I hope we can hear your special soundtrack sometime soon. I like the funny juxtopositions of songs.

I will see you later I hope. Finally have a moment to blog today at beige. Hi y'all!

random off topic thoughts

I have throbbing gristle on vinyl.
I need to rob uncle fritz's closet so I can look hip like him.
I'm hoping that a little piece of dubz will make me hip. progress is being made

Yes Arthur! Please make a music mix. In fact I would love for everyone to make musix mixes. Please.

FB, the Comus, First Utterance...what can I say, it is brilliant. I see pagan dwarves dancing in the moonlight.

Anonymous said...

Which Throbbing Gristle do you have? That seems hip to me. You don't need UF's clothes, they smell like corn puppets.

Anonymous said...

Wha? Dubzy, I just left a note on your blog and now I've read the comment about dissing. NEVER! You are the wind beneath my wings, the blades within my slicer....I am here at beige catching up. I am so not in the mood.

dubz said...

oh pd i just got so insecure there for a minute. thinking you were over me or that you had a new dance partner or something. i've dried my eyes now and reapplied my thick black mascara. i hope you still love me in a sick way.

ME said...

mm TG answer on my blog, not the goldmine that I thought.

Yes Dubz, the love I have for you is downright disgusting.

Hi FB!

Hi blogger friends, I am here and it is ugly. I dumped sulpheric acid down a drain today and my hair smells funny from all the fuming.
The music seems very good but I haven't heard of any of it. Embarrased.

dubz said...

hammy, i thought faust was a fencing term.

Anonymous said...

Dubz, don't play dumb...you know Faust is the devil. You sold your soul to him with that Jesus post.

Hi Hams!

dubz said...

Anonymous said...

menace has come to roost upon the brain. the disunity is grungy, i am porous. it is terrifying, i want to feel normal but i am so fractious, there are the warring factions and i just am not sure i can exist properly. i want to be in a refrigerator.

frogs, please listen. Your feelings can be cured by a feverish game of Chutes and Ladders. My suggestion is that you remove any garments before you commence. This way the game will have more meaning.

The Capt'n said...

It's interesting how we in the west are raised to think of minor keys in music as bitter, sorrowful, or moody, and major keys are more normal and triumphant.
frogs, please remember that you are whole and beautiful. It is that simple.

dubz said...

frogs, don't listen to goblin. what you must do is remove your eyelids to reverse the meaning. this is the way to full-on nakedness + meaning.

Anonymous said...

hmmm dubz you may be right. I may have to rethink my strategies. you are wise.

Anonymous said...

Frogs thanks you for your concern and advice, I will take some of it, maybe all of it, I can't tell. There are creepers sprouting on my back. I have started believing in ghosts and astronaut ice cream just for fun.

dubz said...

frogs please tell mm that i think brokenness is part of the equation.

Anonymous said...

I hit my head.
It hurts.
Now I can't add up, use verbs that begin with "F," or believe in telecommunication. Believe me, the not using the "F" verbs is the most difficult. I can't.... or.... or.... and that is all I am really good at.
I MIGHT HAVE TO MOVE TO A MOTEL.

PD said...

hi sweet mm.

sloth said...

Hi, mm! I'm back. I thought about you often over the last few days. And I decided: you will be the best camp counselor ever.

dubz said...

camp rapes. ick? or funz?

sloth said...

funz. you will be begging for s'morez.

Anonymous said...

Hi sweetmeats! I guess I should make a new post. Right? Oh my little campers there will be so much raping yous will be sore in every orifice. Including ears. Sonic raping will occur. I will rape you with Genesis. Then I will rape you for real in the zucchini patch, they are getting real sizeable if you receive my meaning. And don't forget the pond rapes where I will teach you all synchronized swimming. Me and Hams have this one perfected - you flail around and scream "C*NT" over and over.

fairy butler said...

mm, I have been dreaming about the pond for the last 24 hours. and badminton. i practiced this last weekend and I was bad! i think it was lack of booze. the bocci skillz were strong though.

Anonymous said...

I will rape all of you with zucchini blossoms!
